Meet Gertie!
Our Gertie was born in 1971. She is a Type 2 VW bus that is iconic both in style as well as function. Gertie brings out smiles wherever we journey!
Gertie was named after the frisky, childlike dinosaur created by American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay in 1914 as a short film. Mr. McCay used this film before live audiences as an interactive part of his vaudeville act. The traveling interactive show is the first animated film to feature a dinosaur. Gertie was famous for doing tricks at her masters demand.
Then, as now, Gertie was known to be frisky and a bit childlike,….and always a bit mischievous!
Gertie delighted audiences then, and today she continues her journey with you!

Gertie The Dinosaur in 1914
It influenced the next generation of animators such as the Fleischer brothers, Otto Messmer, Paul Terry, and Walt Disney.
Gertie was the first film to use animation techniques such as keyframes, registration marks, tracing paper, the Mutoscope action viewer, and animation loops.
McCay’s employer William Randolph Hearst curtailed McCay’s vaudeville activities, so McCay added a live-action introductory sequence to the film for its theatrical release renamed Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist, and Gertie.
McCay abandoned a sequel, Gertie on Tour (c. 1921), after producing about a minute of footage.
